Electric vehicles (EVs) are rapidly gaining traction in India, with a roughly 4.2% penetration in the passenger car segment as of March 2026. While still a minority, EVs are growing fast. Tata Motors, a long-time EV leader, faces new competition from Mahindra and MG, but it’s not backing down.
Tata Motors’ Strategy
Tata Motors plans to fight back with competitive product launches, aiming to rival and potentially outsell popular MG and Mahindra models, thus retaining its market leadership. Four major launches are expected in the coming months.
Sierra EV
Launch Date: May 19th
The highly anticipated Sierra.EV will sit below the Harrier.EV in Tata Motors’ India portfolio. Positioned to compete with the Mahindra BE6, the Sierra.EV will offer a more mature design and aggressive pricing.
- Design: The EV will feature significant changes from its ICE counterpart, including a closed-off grille, new bumper, and tweaked headlamps. It will retain cues like panoramic rear glass areas and flush door handles.
- Interior: Expected to get different color schemes and materials than the ICE version’s cabin.
- Technical Features: Underpinned by the ARGOS platform, with 55 kWh or 65 kWh battery packs (a larger 75kWh option might also be offered). It will likely come with AWD from launch, unlike the BE6.
Tiago EV With BaaS
Tata Motors recognizes the importance of affordable and small EV segments for generating volumes. The Tiago.EV is expected to gain Battery as a Service (BaaS) in its upcoming facelift, building on the success of the Punch.EV’s BAAS scheme.
