SUVs
In March 2026, the SUV market experienced another robust month, with Tata Motors solidifying its momentum in this segment. The Tata Punch emerged as a standout performer, securing the top spot in the SUV conversation. The broader utility vehicle market was dominated by a concentrated group of models, with the Punch, Nexon, Creta, Brezza, and Fronx forming the top five volume leaders.
Top 5 Selling SUVs in March 2026:
- Tata Punch: 20,919 units
- Tata Nexon: 21,557 units
- Hyundai Creta: 18,206 units
- Maruti Suzuki Brezza: 16,408 units
- Maruti Suzuki Fronx: 16,104 units
These five SUVs accounted for a collective 93,194 units in a single month, representing approximately 22% of the entire passenger vehicle market, which totaled around 4.16 lakh units.
Punch: From Underdog to Volume Leader
The Tata Punch, launched in late 2021, has achieved remarkable growth, crossing 7 lakh cumulative units by early 2026. The model is available in both petrol and electric variants, with the Punch EV contributing significantly since its launch in January 2024. In March 2026, Tata’s total EV sales stood at 8,224 units, comprising the Punch EV, Nexon EV, Curvv EV, Harrier EV, and Sierra EV.
The petrol Punch ranges from Rs 6.13 lakh to Rs 10.20 lakh, while the electric version starts at Rs 9.99 lakh. This broad price range makes the Punch accessible to a wide range of buyers, from those considering hatchbacks and micro SUVs to those in the market for lower compact SUVs.
The Gap Between Punch and Nexon
The Nexon, leading by just 638 units, highlights an intriguing dynamic. With both SUVs selling over 20,000 units monthly, Tata now has two dominant SUVs operating in the same high-volume segment. Together, the Punch and Nexon contributed 42,476 units in March, making up nearly 83% of Tata’s monthly sales.
Creta, Brezza, and Fronx
The Hyundai Creta (18,206 units) solidified its position as the dominant mid-size SUV, consistently topping the segment since the second-generation model’s launch in early 2024. Its extensive price range and availability of petrol, diesel, and hybrid powertrains contribute to its broad appeal.
The Maruti Suzuki Brezza (16,408 units) and Fronx (16,104 units) demonstrate Maruti’s effective distribution of SUV volume across two products with overlapping price points but distinct body styles.
