Introduction
Just a little while ago, if you wanted to buy a diesel sub-compact SUV with an automatic gearbox in India, you’d have to spend over Rs 10–11 lakh. However, Kia has recently introduced a new variant of its popular SUV, the Sonet, offering a powerful and efficient diesel automatic powertrain for under Rs 10 lakh. A detailed walkaround video of this model is now circulating online.
India’s Most Affordable Diesel Automatic Sub-4m SUV
The following is a transcription of a video walkaround of the 2026 Kia Sonet HTE (O) variant, shared by CG04 Carz on YouTube:
The vlogger begins by highlighting that this vehicle is the newly launched Sonet HTE (O) with the diesel engine and 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox, priced at Rs 9,79,900 ex-showroom. This makes it the most affordable diesel automatic sub-compact SUV in the market.
Exterior Design
The presenter starts with the front of the car, noting its inverted L-shaped LED DRLs and halogen headlights, as well as silver surrounds on the grille and lower bumper, adding a premium touch despite being the base variant. This model misses out on LED headlights, fog lights, front camera, and ADAS sensors.
Moving to the sides, the Sonet HTE (O) gets 16-inch stylized steel wheels with wheel covers resembling alloy wheels, fender-mounted turn indicators, thin matte black claddings, body-colored ORVMs with electronic adjustment, and a simple antenna. Roof rails are also absent.
The rear of the SUV features LED taillights, but lacks a connecting light bar and reverse parking cameras. It does, however, include two parking sensors and a chunky silver skid plate. The base variant omits a rear wiper, washer, and defogger.
Interior Features
The vlogger next showcases the interior, noting the simple key with no remote lock/unlock or request sensors, as well as the lack of an infotainment system and speakers. It does include a single-pane electric sunroof, all four power windows, and a manual air conditioning system. The upholstery is a mix of fabric and leatherette, with AC vents for rear passengers and two USB Type-C ports in the rear. Sunshades are also included in the rear doors, a feature usually found on more expensive models.
Powertrain
The standout feature of this variant is its 1.5-litre diesel motor producing 114 bhp and 250 Nm torque, paired with a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. It offers an impressive claimed mileage of 18.6 kmpl.
